Dempsey, CLM Washington, D.C. Sidley Austin LLP sdempsey@sidley.com Saying Goodbye with Aloha As we learned in Hawaii, Aloha is not just a word, it is a way of life. Aloha is the good feeling passed to someone through a greeting, a farewell, a fond moment, a blessing until we meet again. It can be in the spirit of all we do. As I write this today, I am filled with the Spirit of Aloha; sad to be moving from my time as the Region 4 Director, but excited about the fresh ideas that will come from your new Region 4 Director, Greg Madden, and the Region 4 Leadership Team. As we wrapped up a great conference in Honolulu, Rosa Say spoke to us about "Managing With Aloha." Rosa broke down the word "aloha" to "alo," meaning presence, front or face, and "ha," meaning breath; the literal meaning is often given as "the presence of breath" or "the breath of life." What's more important than "presence of breath"? I hear you. Presence of breath – is that what she said? What is she talking about?? What is the ALA's presence of breath? YOU! It's our members that breathe the life in ALA. I have been fortunate to meet many of you at conferences, CLI's, or at your Chapter events. Speaking with you, learning what your needs are from ALA and what you struggle with in your firms, confirms the importance of making ALA a better organization and, in turn, the best benefit to its members. It's the Spirit of Aloha. As I leave my position on the Region 4 Team, I feel like I take a piece of each of you with me. (Yes, it's corny, but so true!) Thank you all for your support, encouragement and friendship. I am especially honored to have been able to work with such a great Team: Teresa Douglas, Shari Doidge, and Andrea Everage.
