...Be All You Can Be to underscore the reason many people choose a military career. They stress the importance of personal growth in the pursuit of pro- fessional achievement. The underlying theme in their advertising is that success in the Army requires one to make it a way of life, not just a job. But what really makes it an appealing career for many? I am not sure if it is the challenge, a sense of adventure, the desire for a regular adrenaline rush, or just plain patriotism that drives those who enlist. Whatever it is, soldiers certainly make a heavy per- sonal investment to be all they can be. So it is with Legal Administrators. I would not venture to suggest that we put our life on the line on a daily basis, as do our men and women in uniform. But we are often on the front lines with- in our own firms and legal departments, expected to lead the charge. Therefore, we should make sure we are always pre- pared for whatever comes along. Basic Training – Tools for the Private Very few ALA members graduated with the goal of entering the legal field in a management position. Many of us enlist- ed in this career by pure chance. Some arrived by means of a related discipline, such as Human Resources or Financial Management. Others came to it by a more circuitous route, such as Technol- ogy or Operations. Whatever the path, we came armed with enthusiasm and a desire to do great things. From that starting point, we all developed the basic skills of manage- ment, usually while on the job. This basic training was just the beginning of our career development. Field Maneuvers – Tools for the Sergeant With those basic skills firmly in hand, we then ventured into the legal field where we maneuvered around obsta- cles, learned necessary tasks until they could be accomplished by rote, and became familiar with the general lay of the land. In my case, my ALA comrades were a valuable resource to have in my field pack during the formative years.
